Hi everyone!
Inspired by a few discussions over on the Haiku Telegram chat, I decided to kick off an experimental side project: Atomo123, an Excel clone tailored for Haiku.
Here's what I've done so far:
Extracted the core from cuore di sumit
Created the OpenOffice, Excel, and CSV translators
Built a new GUI using TranslatorKit
Set up a coverage system to bench-test all the code
Since I'm carrying the whole team on my back here, I know it'll take months to reach something truly usable, but the foundation is laid!
Feedbacks, ideas, or tips (especially on the bench-testing side) are super welcome.

What is the summary of this discussion that lead up to the decision to start creating an Excel clone? Sounds like a massive undertaking to me.

Yeah, I confirm it is—it's a massive undertaking. In the chat, people were saying it would take at least 10 years of development. I replied that with a task force of 4-5 software engineers and €4,000 in Claude tokens, the workload would probably be reduced significantly. But maybe I was wrong... all it takes is €90 and a laptop running in a loop for a week with a bunch of agents supervising each other 😄

Null I think the start of that discussion was me complaining about how LibreOffice has to install 40 seperate packages just to run and uninstalling LibreOffice does not remove any of them. That led to a discussion of how native is better and some people said that's impossible to do.. So Andrea did it. 😎

first star, come on guys, support us crazy Haiku developers...! :=)
It's really great to see more native apps in the works! Would love to see some novel approaches and different takes on this old subject, like macOS Numbers did in the past, using more dynamic property palettes, better interactivity with formulas, and free floating parts.
Will check out the project for sure!
