RenkuOS Official Logo

Shaka444

I think we need to have a discussion about official the logo we will use in RenkuOS.
We all seemed to like the design @Atomozero came up with -

So this is the logo I used on the Website.

Now we are working on the Deskbar logo and About window logo.
There was an issue with rendering the white logo on the gray & white backgrounds with the logo file as it was so @ilfelice made some other designs.

However, the two designs are not consistent. I would like to discuss this before it becomes uncomfortable for anyone.

Just to add these files here for the discussion-
This is a black logo based on @Atomozero initial logo for Deskbar & About window

If anyone else would like to throw some designs into ring, feel free!

Gotta go to work.. Please post your comments and thoughts

Is there a reason we're highlighting the K?

Something I just noticed is that depending on your settings, whether you have a light or a dark theme, you might only see the letter K in these images. That's to be expected because, as I said before, it has an alpha background.

But to your question, I don't know the reason other than a stylistic decision that @Atomozero ``made And it looked cool..

OK, first of all, the "OS" needs to be in there. Second, this is something that actually needs to be done by an actual graphic artist/designer. All we do here is throw out concepts for the professional to work with.

And while nobody has ever accused me of having any artistic sensibilities, when did I ever let that stop me?

Howdy,

I agree with @clasqm The logo should be "RenkuOS", otherwise we can really get into muddy trademark territory.

Here is what I created. I thought it would help the visualize it in context, so here is a mockup of where the logo will be used:

(Edit: added compact Deskbar version)

I don't claim to be professional designer (I am not). But I can say with confidence that is mishmush of different logos is not a good thing. We have to be consistent throughout all the places the logo/brand is being exposed, so if RenkuOS itself is using these logos, I would suggest adopting them in the website as well. If something better comes along later, it can all be replaced.

I agree 100% that the logos should be consistant and to use "OS" in the name for legal and consistancy reasons.
Esthetically I don't find the font or the the dots appealing. Can we try changing the font to San-Serif, remove the dots and try a version in all caps? I think this might be stronger, but we won't know till we try.
Why was the slogan changed to "Advance"? Connect * Create * Continue is what we agreed on and it has phonetic consistancy. Take a look at the boot screen mockup. It's a strong and solid introduction to the OS. I tried it with the lower case letters but it didn't work as well.

I will wait for other people's input before trying any changes.

I suppose you are referring to this discussion:

https://forum.desktoponfire.com/d/74-proposed-claim-connect-create-continue-and-a-trio-of-mascots

Well, I see a discussion, but I don't see any clear conclusions reached or decisions made (by who?).

Anyway, the reason I changed "continue" with "advance" is because the latter conveys better the purpose of the project, that is, advance as in, don't continue doing the same thing. I apologize for not explaining that when presenting the mockup.

Let's see what other people think. 😉

I think we are the only two people who care about this! 😂

P.S. and I hope I didn't offend you. I'm from New York, we can be a little rough sometimes.. 😉

Well, I am pretty sure at least @Atomozero would like to have his say on this. So, let's not rush things.

Random thoughts:

Sans serif fonts generally look more modern and youthful than Serif fonts. But Serifs were originally added to letters to make them easier to read. Supposedly they draw the eye to where the next letter starts.

The three bubbles in @ilfelice 's example made me think of Rǒċķ Bãņďş adding meaningless diacriticals to their name 😃

I like "advance", even if it means that we lose the alliteration. But we probably would have lost that in other languages anyway.

Shaka444

clasqm Yes, I meant San-Serif! (GIMP called it just Serif..)

I updated the website to add the "OS" to the name

The logo in my deskbar is really hard to see with my Renku partition color scheme. It would be awesome if the Renku part of the logo change to white for the pseudo-dark mode, if possible. For now I will change it to a lighter blue.

Ideally, when switching to a dark theme, the logo in the deskbar should change to a reversed color logo.

I can provide the SVG file is needed.
