Okay I don't have an ethernet connection and my wifi doesn't reconnect on boot, so this created a bit of a crashy situation for me. I would suggest you check for an active connection before you do anything else. The quick and dirty way is to ping a known address (something permanent, like a DNS server) and parse the result. But I'm sure someone will suggest a more elegant approach.
